Back Pain

How to tell if your back pain needs a physiotherapist

Not all back pain is the same. This guide helps you understand when to see a physio, what to expect at your first appointment, and the warning signs that need urgent attention.

Back pain is the most common reason Australians visit a physiotherapist — and for good reason. Most episodes of back pain resolve with the right treatment, but many people wait too long before seeking help. The key indicators that you need to see a physio include pain lasting more than 2 weeks, pain radiating into your leg (sciatica), significant stiffness on waking, or pain that is getting progressively worse rather than better. At ASPIRE Randwick, same-day appointments are available for acute back pain presentations. Our physiotherapists conduct a thorough assessment to diagnose the cause of your pain — whether that's a disc bulge, facet joint irritation, muscle strain or postural dysfunction — and begin treatment immediately. Running Injuries

Running injuries: when to push through and when to rest

The Eastern Suburbs has one of the highest densities of runners in Sydney. Here's how to distinguish between normal training fatigue and an injury that needs treatment.

Running injuries account for a significant proportion of presentations at ASPIRE Randwick — from patellofemoral pain and patellar tendinopathy to Achilles issues and plantar fasciitis. The rule of thumb: if pain increases during a run (rather than warming up and settling), if you're changing your gait to compensate, or if pain is still present the morning after a run, you need assessment. Don't wait until race season is over. Early intervention almost always means faster return to training. Our running assessment service identifies the biomechanical contributors to your injury and provides a structured return-to-running plan. Learn about our running assessments →

Clinical Pilates

What is clinical Pilates and who is it for?

Clinical Pilates differs from regular Pilates in one key way — it's prescribed and supervised by a physiotherapist. Here's who benefits and what to expect.

Clinical Pilates at ASPIRE Randwick and Ramsgate is run by APA-registered physiotherapists in boutique classes of maximum 5 participants. Unlike gym-based Pilates, every exercise is individualised to your body, your injury history and your goals. It's particularly effective for chronic back pain, post-surgical rehabilitation, pelvic floor dysfunction and core strength deficits. Health fund rebates apply. Classes are available Monday to Saturday at both Randwick and Ramsgate. Learn more about clinical Pilates at ASPIRE →

Knee Pain

ACL rehabilitation: what the evidence says about return to sport

ACL rehabilitation is a 9–12 month commitment. The evidence is clear that time-based criteria alone are insufficient — objective strength testing (limb symmetry index ≥90%) and neuromuscular performance should guide return-to-sport decisions. ASPIRE uses VALD performance testing to remove guesswork from this process. Read about knee pain and ACL rehab at ASPIRE →

Post-natal physiotherapy: when to start and what to expect

A post-natal physiotherapy check at 6 weeks post-delivery is recommended for all new mothers — regardless of whether you had a vaginal or caesarean birth. Assessment covers pelvic floor function, diastasis recti, and return-to-exercise readiness. ASPIRE's new parents program is run by experienced physiotherapists at both Randwick and Ramsgate. Golf Performance

Why your body — not your swing — is capping your golf game

TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) research shows a direct link between physical limitations and swing faults. Hip internal rotation deficit, thoracic stiffness and poor shoulder mobility are the three most common physical contributors to handicap-limiting swing patterns in recreational golfers. ASPIRE's golf performance assessment identifies these limitations and provides a 12-week correction program. Learn about our golf performance assessment →
