Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction causes jaw pain, clicking, headaches and restricted jaw opening. ASPIRE's physiotherapists provide thorough assessment and evidence-based treatment for TMJ disorders — often achieving significant improvement within 4–6 sessions.
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your jaw to your skull. When this joint and the surrounding muscles are not functioning correctly, it produces a range of symptoms collectively called temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD).
TMJ dysfunction is more common than many people realise. It frequently co-exists with neck pain and headaches, and is highly responsive to physiotherapy when accurately diagnosed.
— Jaw pain or aching
Pain in the jaw joint or the muscles around it, worsening with chewing, yawning or speaking.
— Clicking or popping
Audible or palpable clicking or popping in the jaw joint with opening or closing the mouth.
— Restricted jaw opening
Difficulty opening the mouth fully — often described as the jaw locking or feeling stuck.
— Headaches & facial pain
TMJ dysfunction frequently causes headaches, facial pain and referred pain into the ear and temple.
We assess jaw range of motion, muscle tenderness, joint sounds and cervical spine contribution — essential for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
Hands-on joint mobilisation and muscle release for the TMJ and surrounding masticatory muscles. Most patients notice improvement within 2–3 sessions.
Specific jaw and neck exercises to restore normal movement patterns, reduce muscle tension and prevent recurrence of TMJ symptoms.
Cervical spine dysfunction frequently contributes to TMJ pain. We address neck posture and mobility as part of every TMJ treatment plan.
Teeth grinding (bruxism) is a common driver of TMJ dysfunction. We provide strategies to reduce jaw clenching and advise on splint therapy where appropriate.
We work collaboratively with your dentist or oral maxillofacial specialist when combined conservative management is indicated.
