Common Causes

What causes this condition?

🎾

Tennis Elbow (Lateral)

Lateral epicondylalgia — the most common elbow condition. Caused by overload of the common extensor tendon. Common in desk workers, racquet sport players and tradespeople.

Golfer's Elbow (Medial)

Medial epicondylalgia affects the inside of the elbow. Common in golfers, throwers and gym goers. Often responds quickly to a targeted physiotherapy program.

Nerve Entrapment

Radial, median and ulnar nerve entrapments cause pain, tingling and weakness. Requires accurate diagnosis to distinguish from tendon conditions.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

How long does tennis elbow take to heal?
Tennis elbow can take 3–12 months without treatment. With physiotherapy — specifically a targeted tendon loading program — most patients improve significantly within 6–8 weeks.
What is the difference between tennis and golfer's elbow?
Tennis elbow affects the outside (lateral epicondyle) while golfer's elbow affects the inside (medial epicondyle). Both respond well to physiotherapy.
Do I need a scan for elbow pain?
Most elbow conditions are diagnosed clinically. If imaging is required, your physiotherapist will refer you for an ultrasound or MRI.
